Bondi Baker Buzz- How to Shop Organic
So, the other day I was lucky enough to meet with Jonathan from one of my favourite places in the universe, Earth Food Store in Bondi. Packed full of beautiful healthy ingredients I love to use for cooking (and eating), I asked Jonathan for some advice on his approach to health, and for some inside tips on shopping organic and baking gluten free!
What is your best advice for eating well?
The best advice for eating well I could give is to eat in moderation! Even overeating really healthy food isn’t great for you. I remember some advice I was given once: Eat 50% solids, 25% liquids & leave 25% for digestion! Other than that, I’d say, eat more fruit & vegies - most people don’t get enough of them in their diet.
What are the benefits of shopping organic?
Well, many varieties of organic produce have higher vitamin & nutrient levels than conventionally grown produce. We’ve found that most customers are not coeliac, but an increasing number of them are gluten intolerant, with bloating & digestion issues. Many of these prefer a gluten free diet and are our largest buyers of gluten free products.
Is there a particular product that sells out?
There are a couple of products that walk out the door & sell out almost every day. One is Iggy’s bread, which for those people who can tolerate gluten is amazing organic sourdough bread baked in locally - it’s the best bread in Sydney. The other thing that sells out regularly is one of our own products that our fab chefs produce every day. They’re called Buffins, and they’re a gluten free, dairy free, sugar free, vegan muffin, made with different crest fruit every day. They’re denser than a normal muffin, and being sugar free, not as sweet, but they walk out the door.
Name three organic products you couldn’t live without
I’d be hard pressed to pick only 3 organic ingredients I couldn’t live without, but if I had to pick a handful I’d say I’d be stuck without a really yummy organic olive oil, organic cacao powder is an essential for baking & also making raw sweets. I couldn’t do without organic maple syrup for the occasional Sunday morning pancakes and my other staple is organic tinned tomatoes for when I’m throwing together a tomato based pasta dish.
Do you have any baking tips for gluten free products?
Gluten free flours such as buckwheat, coconut, rice and almond meal don’t work well singly as they have very little elasticity that gluten based products have. So a hot tip for baking with gluten free products is to mix two or more gluten free flours together.
And finally, anything fun coming up at Earth Food Store?!
We’ve had a number of in-store dinners at Earth Food Store which have been great fun & booked out. We’re probably due for another one soon, but we’re currently thinking about & working on some other projects than are going to happen later in the year. Keep an eye out for changes!
